Celestron s newest planetarium app is an astronomy suite that redefines how you experience the night sky. Explore the Solar System, 120,000 stars, over 200 star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, and dozens of asteroids, comets, and ...
For naked eye stargazing Celestron Skyportal does everything you want and need Make sure to calibrate your phone s compass before opening the app So the point and shoot star tracking feature works correctly I give Skyportal 4 of 5 only because there are other more complicated bigger apps that do more I recommend SkySafari 6 Pus 6 99 size 672 MB I have not tried using this SkyPortal app to operate a Celestron Telescope Skyportal is the best Free stargazing App because there are no in app purchases SkyPortal will not keep trying to sell you unwanted stuff My iPhone 6S says SkyPortal size is 264 MB versus SkySafari 6 size 205 MB and Cost 2 99 with in app purchases bugging you to buy stuff With skyportal you can see all the stars in the world by making earth invisible Go to SkyPortal Settings Horizon and Sky Transparent with Line checkmark Done Look at these three groups of stars by typing their name into the search box or go to the Asterisms List and touch center to see the asterism in the center of the star map 1 the three stars of Summer Triangle 2 the four stars of Great Square 3 the five stars of Milk Dipper not be confused with seven stars of Big Dipper                 Best Free Stargazing App is SkyPortal DaveWhiteChicoCa
This is a terrible downsized version of a great app sky safari It will not consistently go to it won t keep the settings that you ve put in the hand controller max elevation cordwrap etc the cordwrap setting doesn t work if you try to use this with your scope remote it will wrap itself to a grinding standstill The only reason I have this is that it is the only thing offered with Celestron s Wi fi module I m junking both the module and the program and going back to the Orion setup that allows use of SkySafari Newest view IF you have sky safari already you can use the Celstron wi fi module by bypassing this junk and selecting Celestron Wi Fi in the telescope drop down in the Telescope settings in SkySafari It ties you in and works Even though your scope is NOT a Wi Fi scope     Junk Ridgesoar
Frequently disconnects and difficulty connecting on the first place Never experienced anything like this with previous versions     Problems connecting to mount Tebowner
The best app                     You Should try it Target_johnny
It takes awhile to connect and then when it does it doesn t always align properly no matter which setting I choose Or I ll align all the stars and it ll say that nothing is aligned             Difficult to Connect to Scope CautiousShopper
This app is really cool and generally works but there s a lag when using the arrow controls to slew the scope Also it disconnects from the scope when using the arrow buttons Crashes continue to happen even with this latest version Thank you             Celestron please reduce the lag BCS2002
I can see every planet I The solar system                     Great Maggierocco
All my other astronomy apps will show deep sky objects if selected in settings This one will not even though its selected in settings It s not until it s connected to my telescope will deep sky object show up Using iPhone 6 Plus and iPad mini 3         Where are the deep sky objects Kenoguy
Nice tool but it is very unstable Easily disconnects and locks up when using to run my Celestron telescope         Sky Portal Tennisgirl '09
I m playing with this new adult toy please step up with your efforts to make this enjoyable The reviews are atrocious I have yet to use the device or the app Way to go Costco         Celestron Wits Taker
The app was in color before but when updated the app the screen was still normal and the screen suddenly turned red I hope an option to turn off the red color in the app is added             Red screen problem Warygffgd
Display very jittery and compass unreliable             Great app but broke for now CrankyinCarlsbad
Had this app for a while and loved it after the last IOS update it is jittery when I try to use the compass I have uninstalled reinstalled and went through every setting on the app and on my iPad Hope this gets fixed soon     No longer works properly Terrytexstar
I m having problems connecting to my wi fi is there something I need to do it won t join     Cannot connect KLA1026
Inaccurate compass and jittery display on iPad make this app almost unusable         Almost unusable mfd14534
The compass mode is jittery and unstable This the case for both my iPad 4th generation and iPhone 5s Otherwise great app please repair the compass issues                 Compass problems Rachelnv
Compass is very jittery and not working very well Also the narration seems to have been taken away from this current version Please bring the narration of the objects back Also please fix the compass problem Very unsteady and shaky         Not working Gieb1973
Have always loved this app especially the audio narration that comes with it This adds to the interest when looking at Tonight s Best But this version doesn t seem to play well with iOS 9 3 5 The audio setting in Appearance and Behavior Ambient Sounds is defaulted to the off setting and when attempting to change this setting the app crashes Hope something is fixed soon Maybe it s a specific problem with my iPhone 6S Plus but I think it s an app compatibility problem             No sound with iOS 9 3 5 A&O mommy
What a joke of an app Do nothing differently and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn t When it does work half the time it crashes or freezes beyond the point of being useful Close the app and open it again and cross your fingers and it may work DONT BUY A SCOPE FROM CELESTRON THINKING THIS APP WILL ALLOW FOR YOU TO EFFICIENTLY USE THIS WITH YOUR PHONE I was that consumer and I truly regret investing in a 800 unit thinking I would be benefiting from a well designed app Oh and when your CELESTRON 6se gets the all too common boot loader issue and you HAVE to use the app welcome to my hell Very weak     This has to be a joke Heat>knicks
Made for Celestron by the same group that make SkySafari This app does not use the alignment saved in the mount and requires re alignment using the App When one re aligns using the App the mount alignment is overwritten If you use the SkyFi module SkySafari Pro5 I have on my AP 1100 GTO mount that setup uses the alignment in the mount which is far better The Sky Portal app is also a watered down version of SkySafari Celestron needs to work on the alignment issue         Sky Q Link Sky Portal minneola123
Great app for stargazing the best one I ve found even if you don t own a celestron telescope And it s free Aligning the telescope is still a hit or miss and very hard to get working correctly and many more deep sky objects show up when I sync up to the telescope maybe there are more on the scopes database One thing I would change is for it to mark the deep sky objects more if you have the intensity up all the way they should show up more easily when you zoom in Some galaxies you can t click on even if you re zoomed in and can see them the only way to select it is by finding its name in the search and pressing center                     Great app Duisshb
Userfriendly great for amatures and experts Can t wait to a get go to assembly mount from celeston soon yet to use the amazing features of wifi scope mounts                     Does what i needed Megagregzilla
Very informative and easy to use for novice                     Skyportal PegB3130
The App does not display Deep Sky Objects in the sky map even when turned on in the settings It is a shame on Sky Safari that is powering this app not to fix this glitch yet I wonder if this omission is intentional in order to drive the sales towards their Sky Safari Apps It is certainly doing the opposite Please contact Celestron directly to complain about this issue Hopefully that will get this issue fixed         The lack of DSO display not fixed yet AppleMD
Skyportal is a nice way to control a go to Celestron telescope but I find that it loses connection almost every hour for some reason When this happens the telescope will not respond when a connection is reestablished and has to be re aligned This quickly wears on your patience The narrated object information is a nice touch and they chose a good person to voice it If the app would share alignment info with the hand controller or another device connected to the telescope that would be very helpful also Using iPad 3 w current iOS 8 and Nexstar Evolution 6                 Good but could be improved Blackrabt
This app is wonderful but they should add a feature so we can enter a time instead of waiting for it to get to that time then if you could make it run more smoothly it would be the ultimate sky viewing app in the world                     Great app but I have a suggestion ThEcOoKiEcLiCkErMaNiAc
Why would deep sky objects not be on there to tap on All other planetarium apps have them but this one also happens to move my scope so please add them at least the Messier catalog now     Where are the DSO s Deep Sky Dude
This app is good for anybody just starting out to do astronomy It can tell you the names of stars and how far away it is This app is a good quality and does the job A cool feature that it has is that it can connect to certain telescopes and align it for you                     Good app JamieHon
The lack of DSO display should have been fixed by now Not good for Evolution scope owners     No DSO display Jimbobinsky
I had a problem with Celestron Skyportal s clock For some reason it thinks that the current time is 6 hours ahead than the actual current time You can adjust the time but it stays at that time so when I want the real time I have to change the time again             Error with clock Snikerdoodlz
This app could be really amazing but it has a few issues that make it really frustrating to use 1 When it s connected to a telescope the whole app becomes extremely slow to the point of it almost being unusable The frame rate when panning around the stars zooming into the sky and even scrolling through a list of objects in the sky is choppy and unresponsive 2 There is a feature that gives you a list of Tonight s Best objects in the sky for viewing with your telescope The problem is when you tap half of the items in the list an error pops up saying that the object is out of view of your telescope When the error goes away the app is reset to the main screen and you have to navigate back to Tonight s Best and try your luck again Objects that are out of view right now should not be displayed in the list or at the very least when you tap on one it should not reset the app and lose your place in the list This app has a lot of promise but it has a few frustrating experiences like these that leave me fumbling with the app rather than enjoying the stars     Fumbling with this app rather than enjoying the stars mike_m
I ve had the SkyQ dongle on my Celestron AS GT mount for about 2 years and found it and the earlier software versions of skyview ok but he latest version was very broken After down loading the Sky Portal app making it free was a nice apology for the problems with Skyview and it makes for brand loyalty After a rough first night last night I went back and reviewed the help sections where I had problems Went out tonight with it and had a very good time After alignment I banged out a most of the tonight s features one right after another all in the eyepiece lost WiFi once but mount kept tracking and was able to restart session without re aligning A bit of a learning curve but worth it Help section is excellent                     Well this makes the SkyQ WiFi dongle finally worth while Snogeez
Such a joy to control my new Celestron Evolution 8 telescope Really blows away the experience of the hand controller Love this app                     Excellent Faltered
I have had no problems with this app It runs great with my 8 evolution scope My friends love that they can use the app and don t have to listen to me need out So simple to use                     Amazing interface ChrisDines
iPad version has tremendous lag when controlling an Evolution 8 So much that it is unusable Advised that there maybe local interference from other WiFi networks but ultimately it does not do what it is designed to do HOWEVER the iPhone version works like a dream I would give it 5 stars if it connected like the iPhone         Lag when controlling scope Joose28
Great app for the amateur astronomer It s a little buggy at times and needs calibrated easily done frequently but overall full of info I have a manual scope and this app is quite useful in assisting my skywatch                 Great app Dead rabbits dogs of war

What a great way to run my new telescope Im headed to The Texas Star Party and cant wait to use this in dark west texas skies No more fumbling through cumbersome handcontroller comands just point to the object and hit goto off the telescope goes It has a great vocal feature as well Also is the dark vision red scree feature a must to protect your night vision Well done Celestron                 Evolution App
This would be a great app except for one thing There is no way to have DSO deep sky object information come up in planetary mode If there is then atleast I havent found it        Weres the DSO info

Why do DSOs not show up on the screen even when ON is selected Why do their labels not appear This is with a large magnitude number selectedie mag 12 so even very faint DSOs should be on the screen Thats a big deficiency Wed want to see the deep space objects in the sky so we could select them for information or slew to them As set up you have to know whats up before you can find out whats up There are audio descriptions for many objects these are well done and its a nice feature but the first one I listened to had the wrong info M33 is not over 3 million light years away And that contradicted the descriptive text info that shows it as 28 million And even that may be a little farther than it actually is One recent report has it as a tossup with the Andromeda Galaxy as to distance Finally in the unsettling category whats the comet near the feet of GeminiJanuary 26 2015 It shows Comet Lovejoy elsewhere in the skyand labelled nicelybut this unknown comet is neither labeled or selectable It also doesnt show up in Sky Safari 4 Given that this is based upon Sky Safari 4 Id recommend trying this out and then springing for the real app Still keeping this around could be good for the audio blurbs           Intriguing Some striking issues but nice app
Very nice for stars doubles and planets Dso only gets labeled when selected I would like to also see an option for star reversed fields I do quite like it              Dude where is my dso
